Missing Sync – Sync your phone with your Mac
Most of us own a mobile phone and most of use use Apple’s Address Book, iCal and iTunes applications to store all of our contacts, events and media. With Mark/Space Inc’s The Missing Sync – you can seamlessly sync your contacts, calendars, media and more to your mobile phone, and keep it up-to-date whenever you make a change on your computer.
The Missing Sync has grown to become an indispensable option to anyone who wants to connect their mobile phone to their Mac. I’m using the Symbian version of The Missing Sync, however the interface and general options are the same for all versions of The Missing Sync.
Upon the first launch, you’ll need to connect your mobile phone to your Mac, register the software, and download the plug-in for your handset. You can pair your phone either by using Bluetooth or the USB cable that came with your phone, and finally, download the plug-in to your phone. Registration only took a few seconds, and within minutes the first sync had completed.
The Missing Sync interface is pretty easy to use, in the main plug-in view, you can see all the plug-ins that are enabled or disabled, the last time they synced with the phone, and what the next sync action is. Double clicking on a plug-in allows you to drill down into its preferences. For example, double clicking on the Music plug-in allows you to select what content and Playlists from iTunes that you want synced to your phone.
The plug-ins included allow you to sync your Calendar, Contacts, Folders, Music, Photos, Tasks and Video. Bear in mind however, any DRM protected music and videos bought from the iTunes Store won’t play on your phone, so you may want to upgrade some of the songs to iTunes + if you wish to sync them onto your phone.
One of the nice features of the plug-in on your phone is that when you enable the option in The Missing Sync’s preferences, it automatically connects and opens The Missing Sync when you are in vicinity of your Mac’s Bluetooth connection. Meaning that you don’t need to constantly remember to sync your phone and that all of your media and information is up to date.
One of my favorite things about this application is that it also syncs your SMS and Call Log. That means that every phone call and text sent and received is added to the Call Log and SMS Log. It’s a really handy feature to have built into the application.
All in all, The Missing Sync is a fantastic application to have if you want to be able to sync your contacts, calendars, media and more to your phone. The Missing Sync is available for many different mobile phones, including those running the Blackberry OS, Palm OS, Web OS and Symbian phones. An Android version for all phones running Google’s Android operating system is in the works too. The Missing Sync is available on the Mark/Space website for $39.95, 3 seat Family Pack licenses for $69.95 are also available.
