Free up hard drive space with GrandPerspective

grandperspective-1Need to free up space on your Mac, but not sure where to start? GrandPerspective is the application you need. I use a MacBook as my primary computer, so hard drive space is at a premium. I want to be able to maximize hard drive space as much as possible and not have unnecessary files take up space. GrandPerspective allowed me to quickly identify what files where taking up the majority of space and then gave me the option to delete these files.

GrandPerspective is unique in that is uses a very visual interface that is easy to use. When you launch GrandPerspective, your finder window will appear, and you will select which hard drive you wish to analyze, and then click “scan.” The application will then scan the hard drive (this could take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive) analyzing all the files from the smallest to the largest.

Upon completion of the scan, a new window will appear with most likely thousands of multi-colored boxes of various sizes. The size of the box is an indicator of the size of the file; the larger the box the larger the file. You can click on a box, and the size and location/name of that file will appear at the bottom of the application window. If you wish to further explore that file, or even delete it, you click “reveal” which will bring the file up in the finder window.

You can also use the “up” and “down” button to zoom in and out of the “Grand Perspective” of boxes, and you can select “more” to learn aggregate data about your hard drive and display options. Be careful when deleting a file, as some large files are necessary for the operation of Mac OS X. I would advise Googling any large file in which you are not sure of its purpose. GrandPerspective is an essential application that will keep your hard drive free of unnecessary files and thus free up more room for important files.
